NeoReader automatically copies files to Download/

When opening files with NeoReader it automatically copies the file to the Download directory. Any edits (e.g. scribbles, annotations) are then saved to that copy and not the original file. This is incredibly frustrating as it prevents usage of cloud sync applications such as NextCloud, Dropbox, OneDrive e.t.c. Those apps work just fine on my device (Note 3) and can sync files from the cloud to the device with no issue, however as soon as I open a file in NeoReader a copy is made and therefore changes are not applied to the file synced by the cloud sync app.

Is there any way to disable this automatic copying behaviour? This is a real issue for my workflow between devices.
