Tab Ultra C - keyboard not working with NY Times crossword

I'm trying to solve crosswords using the New York Times crossword app and the keyboard cover using the latest version of the firmware in the Tab Ultra C. The app does not recognize the keyboard and it behaves as if it wasn't connected.
