Screen resolution and Linux

Why are the recommended resolutions (Windows OS:1400x1050, zooming 125%-150%, Mac OS: 1600x1200) what they are?

Also, is there any reason to use one of these resolutions on Linux? The Linux app tells me that the recommended resolution for my computer is 1400x1050 with 150% zoom.
