Access floating toolbar when icon is hidden on Tab Mini C

I just got a Tab Mini C and have set up NeoReader mostly to my satisfaction. I like the floating tool bar but I do not like having the little icon in the margin. When I went to the setting menu, I turned on the choice labeled "Hide the indicator when it is collapsed (Call it out by swiping inwards from either side)". However, when I swipe inward from either side, I get the close application dialog or, with that dialog turned off, the application closes. How do I access the floating tool bar with the indicator turned off?

  You probably have a system-wide gesture setting that is taking priority over the NeoReader gesture.

  From home screen Settings >> Gestures >> Side (switch between Bottom and Side on tabs at the top).
  You can disable side gestures entirely or Select "None" for just the side that you want to use in NeoReader.
