Screen streaming over HTTP
Hello, I just purchased the Note 2 and I'm very happy with it!
Among other uses, I would like to use it during lessons as a graphics tablet and for this I would need to share the Note2 screen with a PC in real time while using the "Notes" app on the Note2, to show to students on a video projector the things I write.
Being the Note2 an Android, I tried many applications and looked for various solutions but none worked until I found a small free app that "almost" does what I was looking for.
The app is called "Screen Stream over HTTP" and very simply allows to replicate the Note2 screen on a web page of a computer (running in the same local network). It works well except when the "Note" app is opened in Note2, which is the one I need to use...
When "Note" is used on the Note2, happens that:
- It's possible to draw only on a portion of the screen in Note2.
- The drawing on the web page is rotated and (when the streaming app is running) also the drawing on the Note2 screen is rotated when its screen is refreshed (see image)
The same thing happens with some other similar applications (probably they are all based on the same public domain code) and also with the famous AirDroid app, in mirroring screen mode.
So the Note2, when the "Note" app is used, becomes somehow incompatible with these streaming applications, probably the internal screen resolution and orientation change or something like that, but in my opinion it could be easy to adapt these apps or develop an official Boox app to get HTTP streaming working properly.
What do you think Boox?

+1
Native HTTP screen streaming would be very useful. Especially for conferences or online lectures.

I have exactly the same problem when I use "Note" with the native screen sharing app in their store, Teamviewer Quicksupport.

I have the exact same problem while trying to use my Onyx Boox Max3 as a whiteboard during a Zoom videocall. I can get on the Zoom app and screenshare just fine, but when I try to use the Notes app, I can only write on part of the screen and it ends up duplicated and rotated. Having this kind of functionality would be SO USEFUL, especially now when we're all having to work from home. I can kind of write on the Zoom internal whiteboard, but it would be so nice to be able to use the Notes app.
Alternatively, I would love to see a functionality like the LiveView for the reMarkable tablet, where you can see the tablet display on a desktop app and instantaneously see what you're sketching or writing. Then I would be able to use the Boox as a whiteboard and share the screen from my desktop. I have tried using some online whiteboards and other apps like Vysor, spacedesk, and virtual tablet, but it's all too laggy and clunky to be useful.

Hi Annie, I found a workaround. Using the app Rotation Control I can force the rotation also in the Note application and doing so with horizontal screen, the streaming finally works as it should!

Hi Paolo! Thanks so much; that's super helpful. I tried it just now, and the rotation problem is fixed, but I still have the issue where you can only write on part of the screen and it gets duplicated further down. I tried it on both Zoom and the Screen Stream app with the same results.
Do you know what might be causing this? I have Rotation Control set to Auto Landscape (which is the only setting that works to get the Notes app to do landscape for me).

In the picture is the setting that I keep and works.
Strange that you see the same draw resized... check in Http Stream in image settings that the image is 100% size.
Another thing that you can do to use the streaming, also in vertical mode, is creating a blank PDF and use it drawing notes on it. This is more compatible with streaming apps and works both vertical and horizontal orientation

Yes! it works! thanks so much :)
The issue was that the Screen Stream default setting was 50% image resize. I changed it to 100% and now it works.

Happy to hear!
I hope that in next firmware this function will be included and will work seamlessly. I think that is pretty easy to implement and the source code to do it is public domain since on the app store there are many apps all identical to Http stream (also as menu and settings) that do the same thing :-)

Nice approach Paolo! I was looking for a way to do this but only succeeded reading this post.
I hope that making this native will make it possible to stream using colours too, since now I only see black and white.
The note app also doesn't stream immediately, I need to click on a button to update the pen strokes on the stream.
Also the eraser lags on my Onyx boox note device while streaming.

I was about to create a new post regarding mirroring the Note 2 onto PC and my experiences with trying different android apps to see if this was possible until I searched and found this thread. I agree with the original poster and ran into the exact same issues as well. If Onyx could make this a native feature for their devices it would be a much desired feature - even the RM has this feature although I heard it is not the greatest.
I currently need this when teleconferencing in for meetings when sketching / white-boarding ideas with other team members online. I'm surprised that this concept hasn't caught on more with these e-readers, especially during a time where we are required to stay at home and work remotely.
Please Onyx make this possible in a near future update - I will still continue to support you guys!
Thanks!

This post is quite old already but boox doesn't seem to listen to their customers..
I talked to the "feedback" customer support and stated a similar issue: When using the inbuild casting function (to cast to a windows PC and then share the screen in Zoom) you can't really use it as a whiteboard because the stream is always in 1920x1080 landscape mode. This leaves huge white boarders around the stream when using the note app in portrait mode. A portrait streaming mode would be very nice for this kind of scenario but the customer support simply said this is not possible and won't implement it. Maybe if more people post their concers this might change..
[Edit] Using the inbuild casting function the colors are visible on the casted image which is a great plus compared to some third party alternatives.
