Background AI. Does it do anything?

There is the option for CHARACTER RECOGNITION IN BACKGROUND

But what does it actually do?

If you do CHARACTER RECOGNITION manually it creates a page of text thst you can use, copy, save etc

But in BACKGROUND I cannot see thst. 

I assumed it would do a section OCR'd text for every page (perhaps as a layer) but I can't see it.
